The sound difference is night and day, which is why I'll have a hard time leaving it for something else. If there are more granular EQ controls - which there might be - I've never felt the need to explore them or tweak further than the result I got with small adjustments from the app's defaults. It has predefined EQ's applied to your specific Mac computer (that sound absolutely amazing out of the box) and a few options to further enhance your sound, which you can control the intensity of. I like Boom3D, because it's incredibly simple for someone like me who greatly appreciates the set-it-and-forget-it approach. So from what I can tell by reading about SoundSource, it seems like SoundSource gives you a much more granular control over your EQ significantly. You could give it a try and if you don't want to keep it, you can always uninstall it and turn the better security option back on. They would have bank accounts and other identifiable information, so are much less likely to risk something like that. However, as it has a paid version it gives me confidence they wouldn't put in malware as there would be serious legal consequences. If you are worried about security, maybe try an alternative. The security thing is just because it integrates directly with the audio pipeline, so requires special permissions that normal macos doesn't provide. Might be possible to automate with Automator or Shortcuts. But you just have to start / quit the app when you plug in your headphones. Īs far as I'm aware you cannot have automatic presets. The plugins change specific audio settings, eg the 10 band equaliser, matrix reverb. In terms of settings, it uses all of the ones built into macos and any others on your system.
